College can be a very stressful, as well as a wonderful time of life. The need to make new friends and be part of the social scene is a very powerful draw. Some students seek socialization that centers on alcohol and the use of other drugs such as marijuana, and while this can seem like a lot of fun, it can lead to serious life consequences. Some students find that they are engaging in substance use frequently at the expense of their relationships, academic performance, health and even legal status. Others try to cope with stress by playing video or internet games to excess, or spend hours of time online watching videos, pornography or on social media. Still others play online poker or make frequent trips to the casinos to gamble. When substance use or other potentially addictive behaviors begin to dominate life, people often need help breaking the cycle.
